a Truly Ubud Experience
Unlike typical developments, we have chosen to preserve the earth rather than build over it, ensuring that our guests stay in harmony with the island’s natural heritage. From our expansive rice paddies, you can watch the seasonal rhythm of the harvest unfold right outside your door, offering a front-row seat to the ancient traditions of Balinese farming. You are invited to participate in daily cultural activities that reflect the heartbeat of the village, ensuring your stay is more than a holiday—it is a cultural immersion.
Our architecture honors tradition, featuring natural wood finishes and soft, warm lighting that evokes the cozy intimacy of a Balinese home. For those seeking spiritual or physical alignment, our various Yoga Shalas provide the perfect sanctuary for practice, whether you are traveling solo or as part of a large retreat group. Located just 2 km from the vibrant heart of Ubud Centre, we offer the perfect balance of secluded tranquility and easy access. With our complimentary scheduled shuttle service, the famous Ubud Palace, Ubud market and temples of the town are only moments away.
A Legacy of Divine Happiness: The Story of Ananda Ubud Resort
The spirit of our resort dates back to the 11th century, when the revered Hindu priest Markandya Rsi embarked on a sacred pilgrimage from Ubud to the Mother Temple of Besakih. Along his journey, he identified several holy sites, including the very hilltop where Ananda Ubud Resort stands today—a place he recognized as inherently happy and sacred. In honor of this spiritual heritage, we are named Ananda – the ancient Sanskrit word (Sanskrit: आनन्द) means bliss, supreme joy, or divine happiness.
The modern chapter of our story began in 1972, when I Wayan Pageh, then an assistant to the King of Ubud, built a home on this blessed land for his wife, Nyoman Suryani, the local midwife. What started as a private family compound soon opened its doors to the world; as friends visiting Ubud sought a place to rest, the family built their first guest rooms and a family temple, laying the foundation for a tradition of hospitality that has spanned over half a century.
Today, Ananda Ubud Resort has blossomed into a cherished three-generation family sanctuary. While we have grown to include more accommodation nestled among rice paddies, serene Yoga Shalas, and refreshing pools, the heart of the resort remains unchanged. The family now oversee the daily operations. When you stay with us, you aren’t just a guest; you are part of a living history and a family legacy dedicated to preserving the “divine happiness” of Ubud.
